The prohibition of both the use of animals in circuses and pony carousel rides was brought in by the Popular Party (PP) Government in Malaga last week.
This follows an announcement made in October last year by the mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre, who stated that the use of animals in circuses and pony carousel rides would be prohibited by the City. He made the announce during a meeting with the Federation of Protectors of the Province, referred to as Tidus, and further, unveiled the formation of a new federation for the protection of animal rights.
The President of the Malaga Society for the Protection of Animals and secretary of Tidus, Carmen Manzano, explained, “animal lovers and animal rights campaigners are united as a strong voice that will not be silenced until animals have the respect and love that, as sentient-beings, they deserve.’’
Malaga joins the other 117 Spanish cities that have banned the use of animals in circuses, these include Barcelona, Lleida, Girona, Tarragona, Vitoria, Alicante and Vigo.
