On 2nd August, the famous Trevi Fountain in Rome was the stage for a flashmob demonstration in support of SOSdelfini, a campaign by animal welfare organisations to raise awareness about the plight of dolphins in captivity. Coordinated by Italian organisations LAV and Marevivo, the demonstration using hundreds of dolphin-shaped helium balloons took over the popular tourist location in Rome. SOSdelfini campaigns for an end to dolphinaria in Italy, which currently has five captive dolphin facilities with a total of 26 bottlenose dolphins. Scientific evidence confirms that captivity severely compromises the welfare of dolphins.
SOSdelfini is part of a wider European campaign, supported by Born Free Foundation and ENDCAP, that call for an end to this exploitation of animals.
